Oracle and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have formed a strategic partnership to deliver Oracle database services within the AWS cloud environment.
The collaboration, set to launch in 2025, introduces Oracle Database@AWS, allowing customers to access Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle Exadata Database Service directly on AWS infrastructure.
This new offering, account to a statement by AWS, aims to provide a unified experience for customers using both Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and AWS, with integrated database administration, billing and customer support.
Customers will be able to connect Oracle Database data to AWS services such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), AWS Analytics and machine learning tools like Amazon Bedrock. It’ll also enable organizations to utilise their existing skills and get started immediately with a fully integrated experience for deploying, managing, and using Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle Exadata Database Service on AWS.
“To meet customer demand for multi-cloud options, Amazon and Oracle are connecting AWS services with Oracle Database technology, including the Oracle Autonomous Database,” Larry Ellison, chairman and CTO at Oracle said.
The partnership is also to address the need for low-latency connections between Oracle databases and AWS-hosted applications, potentially improving performance for enterprise workloads.
According to AWS, as early as 2008, customers could run their Oracle workloads in the cloud, and since then, many of the world’s largest and most security-sensitive organizations have chosen to deploy their Oracle software on AWS.
“This new, deeper partnership will provide Oracle Database services within AWS to allow customers to take advantage of the flexibility, reliability, and scalability of the world’s most widely adopted cloud alongside enterprise software they rely on,” Matt Garman, CEO at AWS said.
Among the key features of Oracle Database@AWS include:
- Integration between Oracle Database services and AWS Analytics services without extract, transform, load (ETL) processes
- Migration options compatible with Oracle Zero Downtime Migration
- Procurement through AWS Marketplace, allowing use of existing AWS commitments and Oracle licenses
- Unified support from AWS and Oracle
- Integration with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for database backups and disaster recovery
The service will overall utilize AWS’s multi-Availability Zone architecture to enhance reliability. A preview is expected later this year, with wider availability in 2025 as it expands to new regions.
The partnership reflects a shift in cloud strategy, acknowledging enterprise needs for solutions across multiple platforms. It may offer organisations a way to use services from both cloud providers without the typical challenges of a multi-cloud approach.
