The event featured a panel moderated by Matt Berseth, NLP Logix’s CIO and Co-Founder, discussing two years of generative AI (GenAI), with panelists from companies like CSI, Scribd, and Nexus, offering a well-rounded view of how AI is evolving in real business contexts.

Ted Willich., CEO of NLP Logix, reflected on the event’s purpose: “AI Collaborate is all about our customers getting together with prospective clients as well as our team members, and getting up and presenting practical ways of applying AI to solve business problems. We started it about five years ago. And then over the years, we’ve just built it every year.”

A standout moment was a presentation on how the PGA Tour uses generative AI to elevate the fan experience at its world-class golf tournaments. At the NLP Collaborate 2024 event, Scott Gutterman, Senior Vice President of Digital & Broadcast Technologies PGA Tour, shared insights into how the organization is leveraging AI and advanced technology to revolutionize fan engagement. 

Partnering with NLP Logix and AWS, the PGA Tour delivers personalized, data-driven experiences that enhance storytelling and provide deeper insights into the game.  

Gutterman explained that the core initiative focuses on generating automated commentary for every shot during a tournament. Traditionally, PGA Tour platforms displayed basic shot data — such as distance and location — but lacked the context and narrative that make these moments compelling. With GenAI developed in partnership with NLP Logixgenerative AI, the Tour can now deliver real-time, story-driven commentary that explains what happened and why it matters. 

For example, instead of merely stating a player’s shot distance, the system can add context like how often the player succeeds from that position and its potential impact on the leaderboard. This enhanced storytelling is launching with the TourCast product at the upcoming Players Championship, allowing fans to follow every shot with richer, dynamic narratives.  

As Gutterman also explained in a recent episode of Emerj’s ‘AI in Business’ podcast, a key driver of this initiative is the ability to cater to different audience segments. By combining PGA Tour’s golf expertise with AWS’s cloud infrastructure and NLP Logix’s AI capabilities, the system can generate tailored content for various fan preferences. 

For instance, fantasy sports enthusiasts can receive summaries focused on their selected players, while new fans can access simplified explanations of golf terms like birdies or bogeys. Additionally, the technology allows for multilingual translations and future expansion into synthetic voice commentary, offering a more inclusive experience for global audiences.  

Beyond fan engagement, the AI-powered platform also opens new opportunities for sponsors. Gutterman highlighted how brands like TaylorMade can deliver targeted stories by tracking players’ performance using their equipment. 

TaylorMade’s approach allows sponsors to connect more deeply with fans who use the same products, enhancing brand loyalty. Moreover, fans playing on actual golf courses can compare their performance against that of professionals through integrated tools, bridging the gap between recreational and professional golf.  

Gutterman emphasized throughout his presentation that the collaboration between the PGA Tour, AWS, and NLP Logix is about automating content and making it reliable, cost-effective, and scalable. The AI infrastructure allows the PGA Tour to deliver customized experiences without relying solely on human commentators.

Building Bias-Free AI for Recruitment

On Day 2, Jason Safley from Opptly shared crucial strategies for identifying and mitigating biases in AI models. At the NLP Logix event, Jason Safley, Chief Technology Officer at Opptly, addressed the critical issue of mitigating bias in artificial intelligence (AI) models within the recruitment industry. He emphasized that while AI can enhance hiring processes’ efficiency, it can inadvertently perpetuate existing biases if not correctly managed. 

Opptly implemented a proactive approach to tackle this challenge by retraining its AI models during regular updates and conducting monthly health reviews. These reviews evaluate key metrics to determine if further retraining is necessary, ensuring that the models remain fair and unbiased. 

Safley also highlighted the importance of collaboration in maintaining responsible AI systems. Opptly’s partnership with NLP Logix exemplifies this approach, as they work together to rigorously test and refine AI models. NLP Logix introduced the LangTest framework, a tool designed to assess and mitigate bias in AI applications, demonstrating a shared commitment to ethical AI practices.
