Evaluation criteria

Below, we listed the evaluation criteria we used to compare 5 text to blog post tools:

Content quality

Relevance: A high-quality blog post must address the user’s prompt effectively without omitting critical points.

  • 1: Partially aligns with the prompt but misses key aspects of the main topic.
  • 2: Covers the prompt effectively but may lack depth or miss nuances.
  • 3: Fully aligns with the prompt, addressing all main aspects comprehensively and accurately.

Accuracy: Accuracy is essential for credibility, especially in professional or informative blogs.

  • 1: Contains factual errors or unreliable information & is prone to hallucinations.
  • 2: Generally accurate but may have minor discrepancies or insufficient sourcing.
  • 3: Fully accurate with well-researched and reliable data.

Originality

  • 1: Highly generic, repetitive, or risks plagiarism.
  • 2: Somewhat original with occasional fresh perspectives or unique takes.
  • 3: Offers consistently unique, engaging, and fresh perspectives.

Personalization/flexibility

  • 1: Limited or no ability to adjust tone, style, or length.

  • 3: Highly customizable for tone, style, length, and other preferences.

Language and style

Grammar and spelling

  • 1: Frequent grammatical errors, typos, or awkward phrasing.
  • 2: Minor issues in grammar or phrasing.
  • 3: Flawless grammar, spelling, and phrasing.

Readability: Readability ensures the content is accessible to a wide audience.

  • 1: Sentences are overly complex, unclear, or difficult to follow.
  • 2: Generally clear but occasionally verbose or awkward.
  • 3: Concise, clear, and engaging sentence structures throughout.

Structure/Organization

  • 1: Plain text or poorly organized paragraphs.
  • 2: Includes bold text and some formatting (e.g., bullet points or headings).
  • 3: Well-structured with headings, subheadings, bullet points, and logical flow.

Technical optimization

SEO friendliness: We used a SEO Content Optimization Platform, Surfer, to evaluate the content score for each blog post. Based on their scores:

  • 1: Lowest score
  • 2: Average score
  • 3: Highest score

Use of visual prompts: Images significantly enhance the blog’s appeal, clarity, and engagement.

  • 1: The tool does not generate images or suggests irrelevant or generic visuals.
  • 2: The tool generates some images, but they may occasionally appear unnatural, generic, or only loosely related to the content.
  • 3: The tool generates high-quality, natural, and highly relevant images that complement and enhance the content.

User experience

Ease of use

  • 1: No predetermined customization options to choose from (e.g., users need to enter all the details from scratch, and there are no suggestions for the tone, outline, or the CTA).
  • 2: Fewer options for customization; users need to choose from a limited list of suggestions.
  • 3: Highly intuitive and easy to navigate with good quality suggestions for customization.

Speed

  • 1: Takes excessive time to generate posts.
  • 2: Moderate generation speed.
  • 3: Very quick generation.

  • 1: Minimal or no ability to refine content post-generation.
  • 2: Some options for editing and rephrasing.
  • 3: Extensive customization features.

  • 1: High cost with no free tier/trial.
  • 2: Highly cost-efficient, offering a free tier/trial.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT allows you to personalize almost anything, including the tone, clarity, grammar and punctuation, and writing style, without having to choose from any predetermined category. However, this freedom can be a little overwhelming for some users, as there are limitless options to choose from. This process can be frustrating, especially for users looking for a baseline to start with, such as tone and perspective examples, outline builders, etc.

Another consideration is that ChatGPT can be highly susceptible to hallucinations since it is easily manipulated. Users need to be cautious about double-checking the generated content or the answers to their questions.

Pricing: Free access to GPT4o mini with a standard voice mode, limited access to GPT4o, custom GPTs (only able to use existing ones), and limited access to file uploads, advanced data analysis, web browsing, and image generation.

We tested both GPT4o mini and GPT4o to evaluate the differences between the paid and free versions.

Method:

  • We put the prompt below for both GPT4o and GPT4o Mini: “The subject is email marketing automation, and the intended audience is eCommerce business owners. Create a blog post with a title and a CTA. The general style of the post will be based on here: https://research.aimultiple.com/. The tone will be approachable, trustworthy, informative, and objective, with a playful personality. For perspective, use we, our, us, e.g., We’re excited to announce the release of Writer for Mac, our desktop app for MacOS and use you to refer to the audience, e.g., If you use MacOS, you can install our Writer for Mac desktop app. Add case studies from reputable providers.”
  • Also, we included the same keywords with other tests for SEO. We used Surfer to identify keywords.
  • The tool also generated an image for the post with this prompt: “Now, create an image that would be a good fit for this blog post.”

Notes for GPT4o:

  • It takes a few seconds to create the blog post.
  • The introduction is a bit generic, almost the same as other tools.
  • Content score: According to Surfer, the content score is 71, while the average score is 70, and the top score is 83.
  • Image generation: A realistic image showing key concepts in email marketing automation, such as the growth in subscriber lists and other graphs showing an increase. The quality is not good, as some of the writings are not readable.

Notes for GPT4o mini:

  • The speed of generation is similar to GPT4o.
  • A better introduction with more original content, which is the best one among other tools.
  • Content score: According to Surfer, the content score is 72, while the average score is 70, and the top score is 83.
  • Image generation: Less realistic than GPT4o, includes some of the important keywords in email marketing automation, such as customer segmentation, email workflows, etc. The quality is worse than GPT4o, as most of the writings are not readable.

Grammarly

Grammarly is primarily a grammar-checking tool. Its free plan includes text generation with 100 AI prompts and allows you to personalize text by selecting a target audience.

Pricing: Grammarly allows a forever free plan with limited features and a Pro plan ($12/month/user) with 2,000 AI prompts to generate content.

Method:

  • Decide on the audience: eCommerce business owners are selected for this blog post.
  • Add details: The tool requires you to provide a short description of the blog post and key points. You can add as many details as you like, and there is no guidance on what to add, such as SEO keywords, outline, brand voice, etc. We add a title, a few key points, and a CTA for the blog.
  • Add tone: We used the same tone as other tests.

Notes on Grammarly:

  • It does not automatically create headings, page breaks, bullet points, etc. You need to adjust them on your own; therefore, it can be time-consuming for some users.
  • The tool is forever free, so it can be useful for freelancers. However, the free version includes very limited personalization options.
  • Content score: After adjusting the headings and other style options, we calculated the content score. According to Surfer, the content score is 42, while the average score is 70, and the top score is 83.

Jasper AI

By entering your website URL, Jasper AI can learn from your tone and voice and generate your brand voice according to the input from your website. To add more brand voices, you need to upgrade your plan.

We created an example description based on our website. The voice embodies values of:

  • Clarity: Breaks down complex topics into digestible insights with structured lists and bullet points
  • Thoroughness: Provides in-depth analysis and detailed explanations
  • Objectivity: Uses data-driven language and avoids subjective opinions
  • Authority: Establishes credibility through the use of specific metrics and expert insights

Jasper AI can generate excerpts (1-2 sentence examples of the brand voice in action), and you can edit, delete, or add your own excerpts to improve the quality of your voice.

You can create your Brand Voice, choose from sample topics and audiences, and write your own outline to generate a blog post. Also, you can further personalize your content by adding more information such as topic relevance, audience engagement, and custom information.

You can also chat with Jasper about the blog post and ask for enhancements.

Pricing: Creator plan is $39/user/month (1 user), and Pro plan is $59/user/month (up to 5 users) with a 7-day free trial.

Method:

  • Create a brand voice using input from our website: research.aimultiple.com
  • Identify the topic: email marketing automation, and the audience: eCommerce business owners.
  • We used Jasper’s outline generation feature to create an outline. The outline generation feature works well; the key concepts are detailed and able to cover many subtopics in email marketing automation.
  • Add more information: We included the same keywords obtained from Surfer. The tool only allows for 10 keywords; therefore, we included the top 10.
  • Add case studies: The tool can generate case studies related to the topic, but we did not use auto-generated case studies. (The case studies are not linked to any provider; therefore, we cannot verify their authenticity.)
  • Generate content: After generating the content, Jasper provides suggestions to further optimize the content.
Jasper AI’s suggestions to further improve the generated content.

Figure 3: Jasper AI’s suggestions to further improve the generated content.

Notes on Jasper AI:

  • Jasper AI provided real-life examples, including: “According to Campaign Monitor, email marketing delivers an average ROI of $36 for every $1 spent, making it a critical tool in any marketer’s strategy.” However, we found that the source is outdated (2018), and the numbers are not correct. Therefore, the examples from the generated content are not highly reliable, and it is important to double-check each fact.
  • Content score: According to Surfer, the content score is 55, while the average score is 70, and the top score is 83.

Writer

Writer includes a blog builder, image analyzer, and chatbot and can be added to Chrome via an extension.

It allows you to personalize text by creating a voice for the blog. It can analyze an example copy, or you can manually select from over 30 traits (formal vs. informal, confident, analytical, funny, sarcastic, and more) and perspectives (use “we, our, us,” use “you” to refer to the audience, or use “I and first-person perspective”). Moreover, Writer allows you to personalize your punctuation style, writing style, clarity, delivery, inclusivity, and compliance (data loss prevention and global compliance detection).

The tool has a built-in grading system, and it analyzes spelling and grammar, terms, style, clarity, delivery, and inclusivity.

Pricing: Team plan is $18/user/month (up to 5 users). Writer also provides a 14-day free plan.

Method:

  • Select the voice for the blog post: The tool also allows you to try out the traits and perspectives that are selected.
  • Create a blog title: The topic of the blog is email marketing automation, and we used Writer’s title generation for different options.
  • Add a CTA: We created a CTA to increase engagement: “Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest posts on topics like boosting customer retention, optimizing your sales funnel, and mastering social media ads”.
  • Build an outline: The tool allows you to select from auto-generated subtopics for the outline. You can add more or delete the existing ones to create the optimized outline. We keep the 5 headings for the outline.

Notes on Writer:

Content score: According to Surfer, the content score is 60 while the average score is 70 and the top score is 83. We also applied the suggested changes and checked the score again, and the score did not change.
