AlphaFold transforms biology for millions around the world

[ad_1]

Open sourcing over 200 million protein constructions to assist researchers remedy numerous issues

Huge information in biology results in discoveries that may profit humankind. That’s the core perception at EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), and what its scientists have confirmed to be true ever since its founding on the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton, UK, in 1994.

A part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the institute is an intergovernmental analysis group funded by over 20 member states. Its information span genomics, proteins, small molecules, information fashions and rather more.

As a champion of open information within the life sciences, EMBL-EBI was a pure companion for DeepMind to host the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, offering free entry to protein construction predictions to scientists globally.

After launching in 2021 with round 365,000 construction predictions, the database now accommodates greater than 200m predictions, overlaying almost all cataloged proteins recognized to science and growing our understanding of biology by orders of magnitude.
